Is Donald Drumpf a joke?

United States presidential elections are not exactly an easy topic, definitely not a joke, considering the prominent role of the American President. This time the American elections battlefield has seen a new “rising star” whose controversial personality and outrageous claims have crossed the US borders giving him an incredible popularity. Donald Trump, with his racist declarations, his rich-and-tough-guy attitude and his shameless lies may be just fun for the Europeans, but in the USA the issue is way more serious, as what started as a joke is now dangerously spreading and Trump being the only candidate running for the republican party is becoming a certain fact.

Despite the seriousness of the issue, we know that politics has always been comedy natural environment and American comedians are famous for not keeping their mouth shut when it comes to presidential candidates. Of course nobody could expect them to ignore the comical potential of Donald Trump, who seems to be committed to giving comedians new material for their jokes every day. And the thing is that they don’t even need to add something to make Trump’s claims fun, as they already sound like jokes.

Bill Maher, an American comedian and political commentator, host of the political talk show Real Time with Bill Maher, is probably one of the most committed to the anti-Trump cause. He was even sued by the republican candidate for challenging him to demonstrate that he wasn’t the lovechild of his mother and an orange-haired orangutan. But Maher has tons of other jokes on Donald Trump and is not afraid to continue his crusade, because apart from the funny jokes, he seems really worried about the possibility of Trump’s victory.

Another comedian who’s not hiding his contempt for Trump is John Oliver, an English comedian and political commentator, host of the show Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. Oliver has recently dedicated the main story of his show to Donald Trump, despite he knows that every time his name is said out loud Trump has “a shuttering orgasm.” As Maher, Oliver is worried about Trump’s success, defining his escalation as «America’s back mole: it may have seemed harmless a year ago, but now that it’s gotten frighteningly bigger it’s no longer wise to ignore it». Oliver insists on Trump’s failures in business and on Trump’s lies about his money. Not only does Trump lie about his money, but also on his name! According to Oliver’s research, Trump is not even his real name, as his family changed it from Drumpf to Trump. On Oliver’s website donaldjdrumpf.com people can support the comedian’s anti-Trump campaign.

The same opinion on the republican candidate is shared by Louie C.K., an American stand-up comedian who became famous thanks to his comedy-drama series Louie and currently producing and acting in the new series Horace and Pete. Despire Louis’ typical subjects don’t include politics, focusing instead on everyday life, human behavior, sex, gender differences and parenting, this month C.K. has felt the need to express his opinion toward Trump. With his characterizing satiric tone he wrote:  “Please stop it with voting for Trump. It was funny for a little while. But the guy is Hitler. And by that I mean that we are being Germany in the ’30s. Do you think they saw the sh-t coming? Hitler was just some hilarious and refreshing dude with a weird comb over who would say anything at all.” Comparing Trump to Hitler is only the beginning of his letter, which Louis concludes with these words: “He’s a sad man. But all this makes him horribly dangerous if he becomes president. Give him another TV show. Let him pay to put his name on buildings. But please stop voting for him.”

All these three comedians are extremely popular, and they all exposed against Donald Trump. But they’re not alone. The female comedians Amy Schumer, star of the series Inside Amy Schumer, and Chelsea Handler, famous for her Chelsea Does, both gave their opinion about the republican candidate. When asked, Schumer said Trump should not run for president, and Chelsea, even though she didn’t say anything, made her point clear by sharing this picture on her Instagram profile:

Can comedy and satire help American citizens make the right choice? Sure we hope that apart from making them laugh their jokes will make Americans think about who Donald Trump really is.
